Another One Bites the Dust: Honolulu Advertiser prints last issue

June 6, 2010

The Mainstream Media Death Spiral continues, as the Honolulu Advertiser publishes its last edition today.  From the Washington Post:

For more than a century, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and The Honolulu Advertiser have competed to chronicle Hawaii, from the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy and the Pearl Harbor attack to statehood and the election of island-born Barack Obama.

That rivalry ends Sunday when the Advertiser, Hawaii’s largest newspaper, publishes its last edition after being bought out and combined with its smaller rival. More than 400 reporters, pressmen and other workers are losing their jobs.

The Advertiser is the latest casualty of the recession and the upheaval that the Internet has unleashed on the traditional media industry. Honolulu now joins Denver and Seattle among the cities served by only one daily newspaper and a shrinking pool of professional journalists.

Jeff Zucker Out at NBC?

June 4, 2010

What took so long?  From the NY Post:

General Electric has finalized details of Jeff Zucker’s exit deal from NBC Universal, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Zucker will leave “a couple of months” after Comcast Corp. closes its agreement to acquire a 51 percent stake in the media giant from its current owners General Electric and Vivendi — with an exit package of roughly $30 million to $40 million, under the proposed exit deal, those sources said.

The Comcast acquisition is expected to close in early 2011 after regulatory approval.

Sources close to the company steadfastly denied yesterday that any exit package for Zucker existed. GE, in a statement, called reports of an exit package “not true.”

Nonetheless, sources tell The Post that Zucker has been telling friends that such a deal has been finalized.

Just a few months ago, Comcast and GE extended Zucker’s contract until 2013 saying he would continue as CEO of the newly merged entity, though sources say it’s clear Comcast Corp. COO Steve Burke intends to play the lead role.

Comcast, of course, can’t make any management changes until the deal is complete. Zucker has already been floating some trial balloons about his next move, telling MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and the Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz that he’s interested in politics.

Interested in politics, heh?  Maybe Bill Clinton offered him a job too.

Continued Decline of the Mainstream Media: Newsweek Magazine up for Sale

May 8, 2010

The Washington Post Company put Newsweek Magazine up for sale last week, as the Mainstream Media Death Spiral continues.  Liberal, biased commentary drives readers away every time, whether it’s magazines, newspapers, or cable news.

From John Podhoretz in Commentary Magazine:

“We don’t see a sustained path to profitability,” said the company’s chairman, Donald Graham, which is kind of an odd thing to say when you’re trying to sell something. More telling is the celerity with which the magazine lost money following the redesign a year ago: “Newsweek had operating losses of $28.1 million in 2009, 82.5 percent higher than the previous year’s loss of $15.4 million. Its revenue declined 27.2 percent, to $165.5 million in 2009, from $227.4 million in 2008, hurt by diminished advertising and subscription revenue.” One can only presume the numbers so far in 2010 are worse, otherwise the sale wouldn’t be happening. So why didn’t it work? The line being proffered everywhere is that newsmagazines have lost their viability, nobody wants them, blah blah blah. This is almost comical nonsense. The most successful weekly magazine in the United States right now, by some measures, is the Economist, which is…a newsmagazine. The other line is that Newsweek’s website is retrogressive, and that helps to explain its decline. Again, this is ludicrous; nobody talks about the Economist’s website either. The problem isn’t the website, or the newsmagazine genre in absolute terms. The problem is that Newsweek has been misrepresenting itself to its readership for years, and lost the confidence of its readers; and continued to pretend through the redesign that it was something it is not.

For years, Newsweek was a liberal journal of opinion masquerading as a news publication that attempted to sell itself to a mass readership with a lot of health-care, entertainment, and lifestyle fluff. As a vehicle for news analysis, it was entirely conventional; as a purveyor of sociological fluff, it was kind of fun, though often enragingly so; as a journal of opinion, it was to actual journals of opinion as tofutti is to gelato, flavorless and bland and mock. Last year, Meacham and Co. ditched much of the news analysis and sociological fluff in favor of more and more opinion.

It will not surprise you to know that much of the opinion dealt with the ways in which Barack Obama was right and noble and good and strong and tough and resourceful and a good symbol and an agent of change and so is his wife, by the way — and when it was not about that, it was primarily about how the right is at war with itself and torn and in conflict and dominated by anger and full of rage and presumptively racist and anti-gay and anti-women and anti-media. That was to be expected. But there was really almost nothing else in there, and what was there as a matter of ideological coloration wasn’t especially tough or good or interesting or novel.

Nashville Flooding – The Disaster the Mainstream Media Ignored

May 8, 2010

Why no Mainstream Media attention?  Probably because it doesn’t fit the template.  No pathetic cries for Federal help, no Mayor Ray Nagin-like Democrats giving pointless press conferences, no looting or violence to speak of, etc.

Illegal Immigrant Shoots Arizona Deputy with AK-47, Mainstream Media Silent

May 2, 2010

Looks like the documented citizens of AZ knew what they were doing after all when they passed the recent Immigration bill.  Predictably, the Mainstream Media has ignored this story.  From My Fox Phoenix

A Pinal County sheriff’s deputy is recovering after he’s shot by a group of suspected illegal immigrants and drug smugglers Friday during patrol south of Phoenix.

It happened during patrol on the I-8 west of Casa Grande and south of Phoenix. The deputy radioed in to report he was shot in the abdomen with an AK-47 assault rifle while in a desert area, Pinal County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Tamatha Villar says.

Villar says the deputy found several bales of marijuana and approached a group of five suspected illegal immigrants when he was shot. Two of the five suspects were armed.

Immigrants Carry Sign with “Death to the U.S.” at NYC May Day Rally

Predictably, the Mainstream Media is silent.  Not that anyone’s watching them anyway.  From Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit:

Death of the Newspaper Industry

April 30, 2010

It’s simple:
Biased Content = Less Interest/Appeal
Less Interest/Appeal = Loss in Subscriptions
Loss  in Subscriptions = Loss in Advertising Revenue
Loss in Advertising Revenue = Lower Profits
And Lower Profits, unfortunately = Layoffs

From Randall Hoven in the American Thinker:

Wall St. Journal Goes for NY Times’ Jugular

April 25, 2010

Rupert Murdoch is finally going after local advertising in the NY editions.  From Thomas Lifson in the American Thinker:

The jugular vein of the New York Times Company is local advertising in the New York editions, and the company just acquired a price-slashing competitor that is likely to cost it dearly. In early 2006, Jack Risko and I explained why local ads in the New York market are so important to the Times’ revenues, and why they are highly vulnerable to competition from Rupert Murdoch of News Corp. In mid 2007, I predicted that with the Wall Street Journal under News Corp control, upscale New York readers were going to be targeted for circulation, and that eventually the WSJ was going after the Times’ biggest local advertisers, and was likely to cut prices.

Yesterday came the announcement I have been waiting for. Jennifer Saba of Reuters writes:

The Wall Street Journal is offering some businesses firesale prices for full-page ads in its highly anticipated New York edition to seduce advertisers away from The New York Times.
Wall Street Journal Managing Editor Robert Thomson and other executives plan to unveil the edition during a press briefing on Monday morning.
The section will cover local news, culture and sports, and will be incorporated within the Wall Street Journal. It will be circulated in the New York area. [snip]
To entice advertisers onto the pages of the New York edition, the Wall Street Journal is deeply cutting the cost of a full-page ad and, as a bonus, throwing in a full-page ad in the New York Post, also owned by News Corp.

Republican Staffers Brutally Beaten in New Orleans, Mainstream Media Silent

April 21, 2010

Typical.  Were it Republican protesters who beat 2 Democrat staffers, it’d be the Mainstream Media’s headline for months.  Instead, it’s ignored since it doesn’t fit their template.  From Scott McKay in Pajamas Media:

A brutal beating in New Orleans following the Southern Republican Leadership Conference — held in that city from April 8-11 — has challenged the myth regarding the preferred residence of political thuggery.

Circumstantial evidence is piling up that far-left anarchists viciously attacked a staffer to Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, putting Allee Bautsch and her boyfriend Joe Brown in the hospital with broken bones. The story has been, unsurprisingly, ignored.

Bautsch, a rising star in Republican politics and just 25 years old, helped organize a $10,000-a-plate GOP fundraiser at the legendary Brennan’s Restaurant in New Orleans. Jindal attended the affair, as did Republican Governors Haley Barbour of Mississippi and Rick Perry of Texas.

The event drew a hostile protest from a group which had initially assembled to protest the SRLC at the Hilton Riverside Hotel, a half-mile away. That protest, which had purportedly focused on state budget cuts to higher education and health care, was organized by the Iron Rail Book Collective. The Iron Rail is a self-described anarchist commune, boasting of holding book-study groups on violent revolutionary literature and having vandalized French Quarter banks in recent months.

Iron Rail members engaged in rhetoric which, had it been used by conservative protesters, would have headlined that week’s coverage.

Video of their demonstration at Brennan’s shows a protest barely short of a riot. Attendees at the fundraiser were subjected to intense verbal abuse upon arriving and leaving the restaurant.

After Jindal, Barbour, and Perry had departed the restaurant from a rear entrance, an employee of Brennan’s announced to the demonstrators that the three were no longer present. The protesters refused to either leave or to cease the abusive chanting. Sometime either before or shortly after the New Orleans Police were called in a semi-successful effort to break up the protest, Louisiana GOP Chairman Roger Villere found himself blocked from exiting the restaurant’s front door. When Villere then tried to exit through the rear, he was chased by protesters. He made a narrow escape into a waiting taxi.

About an hour later, Bautsch and Brown exited through the front door into what appeared to be a dwindling demonstration. The duo were immediately “catcalled” by the remaining protesters, and were followed by a group of approximately five white males bearing a “counterculture” appearance. The pursuers made repeated insulting comments based largely in class-warfare rhetoric: “little blond bitch,” “you think you’re f***ing special.”

Brown told Bautsch to hurry towards their car. When they reached the 600 block of St. Louis Street, a block and a half from Brennan’s, Brown turned to gauge their progress.

At that time, the attack began.

Brown was immediately set upon by four of the assailants, thrown into a wrought-iron fence. Another assailant attacked Bautsch, knocking her to the ground and stomping on her leg. She suffered four breaks in the leg, requiring a steel rod during extensive surgery on April 10, and faces three months of recuperation.

“Rightwing” Michigan Militia Member a Registered Democrat

April 3, 2010

Jacob Ward, a “Rightwing” militia member arrested last month, is a registered Democrat.  And the Mainstream Media stays silent…  You just know they’re still trying to link them to the Tea Party movement.

From Newsbusters via Gateway Pundit:

Militia member Jacob J. Ward voted DemocratNewsBusters reported:

Liberals in the media have been busy parading around Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center to bash the right. As befits his organization’s MO, Potok, pictured right in a file photo, has done the best he can to link recently-arrested militia members to the Tea Party movement and conservatism generally.

Potok’s job may have just gotten a bit harder, and the liberal media may need to find another way to discredit their political opponents. It turns out most of the militiamen were active voters, and at least one was a registered Democrat. Party registrations for the rest are not yet known.

The Blade, a newspaper in Toledo, Ohio reported today,

Most of the indicted militia members accused of being anti-government extremists have active voting records, a check with area voter registration offices showed yesterday.

One is a registered Democrat, and the party affiliations of the rest could not be determined.

Jacob J. Ward, 33, of Huron, Ohio, voted as a Democrat in the 2004 and 2008 primary elections. He also voted in 10 other elections since 2000. Party affiliation in Ohio is determined by which party’s ballot they requested in the most recent primary election.

CNN Ratings Decline Continues

March 31, 2010

Tough times at the Clinton News Network.  Anderson Cooper, the Paris Hilton of Television News, can’t even keep an audience.  From Thomas Lifson in the American Thinker:

CNN, the liberal cable news network which reported “at least dozens” of people attended the Tea Party Express rally in Searchlight, NV last week, may soon be measuring its audience in similar quantities. Bill Carter of the New York Times reports:

CNN continued what has become a precipitous decline in ratings for its prime-time programs in the first quarter of 2010, with its main hosts losing almost half their viewers in a year.

Mr. [Anderson] Cooper has long been regarded as the strongest host at CNN, but his show has suffered badly as well. For the quarter, Mr. Cooper dropped 42 percent in viewers and 46 percent among the 25-to-54-year-old audience that the news channels use for their sales to advertisers.

Continued:

Anderson Cooper, the openly homosexual Vanderbilt heir, is now damaged goods, having applied the label “teabaggers” (homosexual slang for a graphic sexual act) to the Tea Partiers. He should have lost his job for that exercise in smutty sarcasm, but instead continues to destroy both his own and his employer’s standing.
Meanwhile, Fox News Channel, the only major news source willing to ask tough questions to President Obama and the Democrats, continues to soar in the ratings:
At the same time, Fox News, which had its biggest year in 2009, continues to add viewers. Greta Van Susteren‘s show was up 25 percent from a year earlier. Bill O’Reilly, whose show commands the biggest audience in prime time with 3.65 million viewers, was up 28 percent, and Glenn Beck was up 50 percent from a year earlier.

Liberal Anger: Obama Supporter Charged with Threatening to Kill Eric Cantor

March 29, 2010

The Mainstream Media is sure to stay away from this one since it involves a threat against a high-ranking Republican, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor.  Norman Leboon, a documented Obama supporter, posted a Youtube video in which he threatened to kill Eric Cantor.  From Foxnews.com:

A Philadelphia man was charged Monday with threatening to kill House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, a week after the Virginia Republican said his campaign office was shot at in the aftermath of the health care bill passing Congress.

Local reports said the bullet that shattered a window at Cantor’s office last week turned out to be a stray that had been fired into the air — but the federal charges filed Monday detailed how Cantor was allegedly threatened in an apparently separate incident.

Norman Leboon, 38, was charged after he allegedly recorded and posted on YouTube a video in which he threatened to kill the congressman and his family.

“My Congressman Eric Cantor, and you and your cupcake evil wife,” the video said, according to the complaint. “Remember Eric … our judgment time, the final Yom Kippur has been given. You are a liar, you’re a Lucifer, you’re a pig, a greedy f—ing pig, you’re an abomination, you receive my bullets in your office, remember they will be placed in your heads. You and your children are Lucifer’s abominations.”

Cantor’s office released a statement saying he was notified of the threat over the weekend and that he was “deeply grateful” to law enforcement for their help.

Liberal Bigotry on Full Display

February 6, 2010

Great read from Bob Weir in The American Thinker on several recent episodes that highlight the bigotry, and hypocrisy, of liberals.

“For an hour, I forgot that Obama was black,” said Chris Mathews, the host of MS-NBC’s “Hardball,” after he finished watching President Obama’s State of the Union address. Did Mathews mean that he’s not used to hearing from articulate blacks who sound just like educated whites?

Recently, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was quoted in the book Game Change as saying privately that Obama, as a black candidate, could be successful thanks in part to his “light-skinned” appearance and speaking patterns “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.” Did he mean that Obama wouldn’t have reached the White House if he was darker-skinned or spoke with the African-American vernacular English known as Ebonics?

In the same book, it was reported that Bill Clinton, when he was trying to persuade Ted Kennedy not to support Obama, remarked to the senator, “A few years ago, this guy [Obama] would have been getting us coffee.” Did he mean that Obama’s race qualified him only for menial jobs? During the 2008 campaign for president, Senator Joe Biden, referring to Senator Barack Obama, said, “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.” Evidently, these folks haven’t spent much time around black people. Hence, they’re shocked when they come across blacks who are physically attractive, well-spoken, well-dressed, and who bathe regularly.

Another One Bites The Dust: Denver Post Owner to File Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

January 16, 2010

The owner of the Denver Post, another liberal newspaper with dwindling circulation and advertising revenue, plans to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

From Yahoo! Finance:

DENVER (AP) — The holding company for MediaNews Group Inc. newspapers, including The Denver Post and San Jose Mercury News, says it plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Affiliated Media Inc. said Friday it would file a “prepackaged” plan already approved by lenders, which should allow it to emerge from bankruptcy more quickly.

It would be at least the 13th bankruptcy filing by a U.S. newspaper publisher in the past 13 months. The owners of dozens of newspapers have been pushed into bankruptcy protection as the recession and competition from the Internet have sapped advertising revenue.

NPR Uses Taxpayer Funds to Bash Tea Party Protesters

January 4, 2010

From Political Lore:

Ridicule of Americans who participated in Tea Party rallies is not just for MSNBC and CNN anymore. National Public Radio (NPR) has gone all Alinksy on Tea Partiers, and your tax dollars are helping to pick up the tab.

A prime example of radical socialist Saul Alinksy’s Rule #5 (Ridicule) is featured prominently on NPR’s website — in the form of a flash animation titled “Learn To Speak Tea Bag” — which ridicules tea partiers, pro-lifers, opponents of the Democrat Party’s health care reform, and more specifically, three Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives (John Boehner, Eric Cantor and Michele Bachmann).

NPR, more than any other network, best fits Rush Limbaugh’s description of “state-run” media. Although its supporters are quick to point out that only a small percentage of NPR’s funding comes from taxpayerss, that still amounts to millions of your tax dollars every year.

National Public Radio has long been a hotbed of liberal bias, but it has become more radically leftist in recent years. The implementation of Alinskyite tactics by NPR is just the latest controversy to boil around the controversial network. Just last month, NPR brass put pressure on its chief political correspondent, Mara Liasson, in an effort to discourage her from appearing so frequently on FOX News as a contributor. What is the pubic radio executives’ problem with Liasson’s participation on FNC’s “Special Report” and other programs? The people who run NPR are far out there in left field that they perceived FOX to be too politically biased. Pot, meet kettle.

The Bottom Line: NPR is using taxpayer money to call those who have participated in Tea party events and their supporters idiots. With the liberal Democrats in Congress in charge of NPR’s purse strings, those who make NPR’s decisions have calculated that they can get away with it scot-free.

NPR Tells Mara Liasson to Halt Fox News Appearances

December 7, 2009

Taxpayer-funded NPR has asked Mara Liasson to “reconsider” her Fox News appearances.  Will Juan Williams be next?

From Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit:

liasson
Taxpayer-funded NPR wants its top political correspondent Mara Liasson to stay off FOX News.
Greta Wire reported:

Executives at National Public Radio recently asked the network’s top political correspondent, Mara Liasson, to reconsider her regular appearances on Fox News because of what they perceived as the network’s political bias, two sources familiar with the effort said.

According to a source, Liasson was summoned in early October by NPR’s executive editor for news, Dick Meyer, and the network’s supervising senior Washington editor, Ron Elving. The NPR executives said they had concerns that Fox’s programming had grown more partisan, and they asked Liasson to spend 30 days watching the network.

Obama’s Approval Ratings – From Bad to Worse

November 1, 2009

Hope and Change is trending downward and for the most part, has been since taking office.  The Mainstream Media rarely mentions Obama’s approval ratings.  Then again, that’d be like biting the hand that feeds them.  From Clarice Feldman of The American Thinker:

The Rasmussen presidential monthly approval polls show a breathtaking drop in Obama’s approval ratings, something we might miss in the daily reports:

monthly_approval_index_october_2009
